FiveFactsAboutDentalImplantSurgery

Perhaps you've heard about dental implant surgery — or maybe you've been told you are a candidate for the procedure. You may already know that today, implants are the “gold standard” of tooth replacement options. It's no wonder why: They have a documented success rate of over 95%, and can last a lifetime. But if you're put off by the thought of implant surgery, then it may be reassuring to learn the following five facts.

1. The entire implant process is planned before surgery is done.

This usually involves taking radiographs (X-rays), and sometimes CT scans, as precision guides to implant placement. Before the minor surgical procedure begins, we have already examined the bite and the bone structure, and determined exactly where the implant will fit in. There should be no surprises during the surgery — which is only one phase of the implant process.

2. Implant surgery uses the highest-quality materials and state-of-the-art techniques.

The implant itself is fabricated of commercially pure titanium, or a titanium alloy. This metal has a unique property — it's capable of osseo-integration, which means it can actually fuse with bone. During the implant procedure, the bone is handled with utmost care: it's gently prepared to receive the implant, and cooled with water to prevent tissue damage. If you don't have enough of your own bone tissue to support an implant, it has even become routine to restore bone with grafting techniques.

3. The surgical procedure itself is generally painless.

Almost all implants are placed using local anesthesia — typically, a numbing shot. If you're especially anxious about the procedure, it's possible to be given sedatives or anti-anxiety medications beforehand. Of course, we will make sure you don't feel any pain before we begin! Some mild vibration is generally all that you may experience during the procedure, but it's very rarely a cause for concern.

4. There is little discomfort following the procedure.

On the day of surgery and perhaps the day after, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID) of the aspirin or ibuprofen family is usually all that's needed to control minor discomfort. You may also be given a prescription for antibiotics and/or a mouth rinse to aid healing.

5. The result: Natural-looking teeth that can last a lifetime.

Implants have become dentistry's premier option for replacing missing teeth. Their placement involves minimally-invasive techniques, and has a success rate higher than any other tooth replacement system. And, given proper care, they can last for the rest of your life. Could you ask for more?

Dr. Roland Markarian offers many cosmetic dental services, but one of them is very valuable and many do not know what it is, and that is cosmetic contouring. Tooth reshaping or dental contouring involves subtle changes for your teeth. Contouring can help with:
  • Irregularly shaped teeth
  • Tiny chips in teeth
  • Excessively sharp cuspids

What is contouring and what is involved?

Tooth reshaping is used to remove small amounts of tooth enamel in order to change the shape, length or surface of one or more teeth. The process is performed with dental instruments and abrasion techniques. Dental x-rays may need to be taken to ensure your teeth are healthy enough for the procedure.

If your teeth are in good condition, the dentist will mark your teeth with a pen to highlight the areas that need sculpting. Dr. Markarian will then use a sanding instrument to carefully remove or diminish imperfections on the surface of the teeth.

The Advantages of Contouring

Contouring is actually much less expensive than veneers and is good choice if you have small imperfections. Listed below are some of the pros to tooth reshaping:

  • Painless: Since only the surface enamel is taken off, there is usually no discomfort during the procedure and no anesthesia is needed.
  • Improves health of teeth: Getting rid of overlaps and other imperfections lowers your risk of decay and gum disease by removing the source of where tartar and plaque can build up.
  • Possible substitute for braces: For some patients, contouring can be an easy substitute for braces because tooth reshaping can make teeth look a bit straighter, as well as eliminates overlapping. But it’s not recommended if you require orthodontic treatment for moderate to severe malocclusion.
Tooth reshaping is a great choice for patients who need tiny adjustments or repairs. It’s not a beneficial treatment for decaying teeth, root canals, or unhealthy gums. Model Christie Brinkley's smile has been a symbol of America's optimism since the seventies. Particularly well known for being the cover model for three consecutive Sports Illustrated Swimsuit editions, Brinkley still has a fresh-faced American girl-next-door beauty that starts with her cheerful smile, which transmits the message that all is well.

Brinkley's modeling career began when she was “discovered” in Paris in the seventies, at the age of 18. As she explained in an interview with Dear Doctor magazine, it was like a fairy tale. She had gone to study art in Paris, where a fashion designer spotted her walking down the street. “He told me later he immediately thought, ‘That's the girl!’” she said.

Brinkley attributes her famous smile to a combination of good genetics (she inherited her mother's “beautiful straight teeth”), combined with the intelligence to practice good oral hygiene and have regular dental appointments. She never needed to have work done to prepare her for the modeling life; but as a teenager, she said, she wished she could wear braces because she thought the “coolest kids had them.”

Although dental restorations were not needed to enhance her beautiful natural smile, she did have two dental implants after she fractured two rear molars in a bad helicopter crash while back-country skiing, and she says she is thankful for dental implant technology because it looks and feels so natural.

Brinkley said that her smile led directly to her assignment as spokesperson for a brand of oral rinse and mouthwash products. She is also concerned about the environment. Her company Christie, Inc. is designing environmentally friendly products.

Her advice to everyone is to smile more. “I think a smile makes EVERYONE beautiful! It's the greatest gift we give each other... It's an expression of friendship, love and peace!”
