Dr. Roland Markarian offers many cosmetic dental services, but one of them is very valuable and many do not know what it is, and that is cosmetic contouring. Tooth reshaping or dental contouring involves subtle changes for your teeth. Contouring can help with:
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Tiny chips in teeth
- Excessively sharp cuspids
What is contouring and what is involved?
Tooth reshaping is used to remove small amounts of tooth enamel in order to change the shape, length or surface of one or more teeth. The process is performed with dental instruments and abrasion techniques. Dental x-rays may need to be taken to ensure your teeth are healthy enough for the procedure.
If your teeth are in good condition, the dentist will mark your teeth with a pen to highlight the areas that need sculpting. Dr. Markarian will then use a sanding instrument to carefully remove or diminish imperfections on the surface of the teeth.
The Advantages of Contouring
Contouring is actually much less expensive than veneers and is good choice if you have small imperfections. Listed below are some of the pros to tooth reshaping:
- Painless: Since only the surface enamel is taken off, there is usually no discomfort during the procedure and no anesthesia is needed.
- Improves health of teeth: Getting rid of overlaps and other imperfections lowers your risk of decay and gum disease by removing the source of where tartar and plaque can build up.
- Possible substitute for braces: For some patients, contouring can be an easy substitute for braces because tooth reshaping can make teeth look a bit straighter, as well as eliminates overlapping. But it’s not recommended if you require orthodontic treatment for moderate to severe malocclusion.
Tooth reshaping is a great choice for patients who need tiny adjustments or repairs. It’s not a beneficial treatment for decaying teeth, root canals, or unhealthy gums.
